In Hack School 3: Building APIs with Express, we’ll explore the backend side of web development and how it powers the frontend you’ve already built. You’ll learn how to set up a basic Express server, create your first GET and POST routes, and send data as JSON, the format websites use to talk to each other. We'll cover how frontend apps interact with APIs, and if time allows, hook up a simple frontend to test it live. No database, no stress, just clean, beginner-friendly backend fundamentals that connect to the web app we've been building throughout Hack School.

In this workshop, attendees will explore key design career paths (UX, UI, visual design, UX research, service design, etc.) and learn what each role involves, from tools to typical projects. By the end, they’ll identify a path that might resonates with them and leave with a personalized plan to start building experience in that area for the school year.

Ready to build modern, scalable frontends? In Hack School 2: React & Next.js, we’ll introduce you to React, the library behind today’s most popular web apps. You’ll learn how to turn your HTML and JavaScript into reusable JSX components, understand the basics of React’s virtual DOM, and get a feel for building dynamic, modular interfaces. We’ll also explore how Next.js helps organize your frontend with routing and performance out of the box. By the end, you’ll start building your first multipage React app that we will be building off of for the remainder of Hack School!

You'll learn how to build the skeleton of a real web app using HTML and CSS, and get a glimpse into what software engineering looks like at UCSD and beyond. This is a precursor to Hack School, so attending boosts your chances of getting in! No experience needed, just bring your laptop and curiosity.

The Summer Projects Showcase will give an opportunity for our summer projects teams to present the projects they built in AI, hack, design, and game development. Showcases will be open to everyone to provide both a platform for students to gain valuable experience communicating their ideas to a general audience, as well as for those interested to get an idea of what projects are. The first 30 minutes will be explaining the projects system to attendees and interested applicants for the next cycle. The last hour will be a science-fair style demonstration of the projects each team built over the summer.
